However, besides the server at the URL whose content you have requested, cookies come from all the various servers whose content must be sent to make up the various parts of the page. Each of these servers can write its own cookies. Session, First- and Third-Party Cookies Third-party cookies track your activity across multiple domains. First-party cookies track your activity across a single domain. cookies log you into and out of sites, moving you from page to page without forgetting you. When you close the browser, session cookies are wiped out. Some cookies from sites you visit, including MSN's passport cookies, used with hotmail or MSN Money, or tripod.lycos's cookies, track your activities across multiple domains. These may be handled by the browser according to rules you've specified for third-party cookies. However, because these can also be viewed as session cookies, these cookies can be handled according to any rules you've specified for session cookies. Other third-party cookies are shared by advertisers whose advertisements are all served via a single domain – However, third-party cookies can normally be disabled. Another alternative is to be prompted before accepting third-party cookies. From there you can check to allow or disallow or prompt for first-party cookies, and to allow, disallow, or prompt for third-party cookies (if you opt to be prompted to accept these, you will soon learn just how many of these get written to your computer). Be careful: if you delete all cookies, sites you have asked to remember you may not do so any longer! From there you can select whether to keep cookies until they expire, until your browser is closed, or until you are asked. (Again, if cookies are set to expire when the browser closes, sites will not remember you.) Click Exceptions to specify specific sites from which to always allow cookies – important because some sites you regularly log into use various session cookies to log you in.
